Trump Named as 'Likely' Target in White House Correspondents' Dinner Shooting Attempt

BBC News 1 переглядів 4 хв читання

US President Donald Trump and members of his administration were apparently the intended targets of an armed suspect who attempted to breach the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington DC on Saturday, according to acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche. The 31-year-old suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, opened fire near a security checkpoint at the event held at a Washington Hilton hotel, prompting law enforcement to forcibly remove Trump and other officials from the venue.

Speaking to NBC News, Blanche indicated that while investigators continue to examine the gunman's motivations, preliminary evidence points toward administration officials as the intended targets. The FBI's criminal division and terrorism task force have launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

Incident Details

Gunshots erupted in the hotel foyer at approximately 20:35 local time on Saturday, while the White House Correspondents' dinner was underway in a ballroom below. Secret Service personnel immediately evacuated Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice-President JD Vance from the event.

Law enforcement engaged in an exchange of gunfire with the suspect, who was ultimately intercepted without being shot. Police recovered two firearms and knives from Allen at the scene. One officer sustained a gunshot wound but was later discharged from hospital; his protective vest prevented more serious injury, according to Secret Service communications chief Anthony Guglielmi.

Investigation Findings

Investigators have reviewed written materials from Allen indicating he specifically wanted to target administration officials, a senior US official disclosed to CBS News. One of Allen's family members alerted authorities after receiving these writings prior to the attack. The documents sent to relatives made no specific mention of the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

According to Blanche, investigators believe Allen travelled to the capital by train, departing from Los Angeles, passing through Chicago, before reaching Washington DC. Allen, a Torrance, California resident, identifies himself on LinkedIn as a mechanical engineer, game developer, and educator. He studied mechanical engineering at the California Institute of Technology. Authorities are conducting a search of a residence in the Torrance area connected to the suspect.

Presidential Response

Following the shooting, Trump addressed reporters at the White House while dressed in formal attire, praising the Secret Service and calling their actions "tremendous." He thanked media outlets for their "responsible coverage" of the incident, while simultaneously calling for Americans to "resolve our differences peacefully."

In a subsequent interview with Fox News on Sunday, Trump suggested the suspect harbored "a lot of hatred in his heart for a while," noting that family members were aware of his "difficulties." Trump also indicated the suspect possessed a "manifesto."

Trump used the occasion to advocate for a new ballroom facility at the White House, asserting on Truth Social that the incident would not have occurred had a "Militarily Top Secret Ballroom currently under construction" been completed. The controversial project has faced multiple legal obstacles.

Official Statements

The White House released a statement on Sunday asserting that Trump "stands fearless" following the incident, which it characterized as "an assassination attempt when shots were fired."

Weijia Jiang, president of the White House Correspondents' Association, described the attack as "harrowing." Seated adjacent to Trump during the dinner, Jiang thanked the Secret Service for protecting "thousands of guests" and announced the association's board would convene to determine next steps regarding future events.

Legal Proceedings

Allen faces federal charges of assault of a federal officer and using a firearm during a crime of violence, with formal charges expected in federal court on Monday.

International Response

World leaders condemned the attack. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed shock at the incident, stating that "any attack on democratic institutions or on the freedom of the press must be condemned in the strongest possible terms." Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was "relieved" that Trump, the First Lady, and attendees remained safe. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese similarly expressed satisfaction that those present were unharmed.

Context

This marks the third assassination threat against Trump in recent months. A bullet grazed his ear during a July 2024 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and in September 2024, a suspected gunman was discovered hiding in bushes at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Trump attended the White House Correspondents' Dinner as a sitting president for the first time; he previously attended in 2011 as a private citizen.
