Independent Verification and International Estimates

Moscow has not publicly disclosed its military casualties. The Russian government last reported official loss figures in September 2022, at which time it claimed 5,937 soldiers had been killed.

As of April 2026, BBC Russian Service journalists and the Mediazona team, working with volunteer researchers, have independently confirmed the identities of at least 212,188 Russian military personnel killed in the conflict since February 2022, based on open-source information.

International organizations and intelligence agencies estimate substantially higher casualty figures. In December 2025, a senior NATO official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told BBC Russian Service that alliance assessments place the combined figure of killed and wounded Russian soldiers at approximately 1.15 million.

Ukrainian Losses

Ukraine has historically maintained limited public disclosure regarding its own military casualties. In early February 2026, President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed in an interview with France 2 that Ukraine has lost 55,000 soldiers killed in combat since February 2022. The president also noted that Ukraine considers a significant number of personnel to be missing in action.

In January 2026, Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrsky reported that casualty rates among Ukrainian military personnel decreased by 13 percent throughout 2025, though he did not provide specific figures.
