Man Detained Following Arson Suspicion in Fire at LGBT+ Nightclub Near Milton Keynes

A 51-year-old man from Milton Keynes has been taken into custody on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life following a blaze that forced the evacuation of Pink Punters nightclub in the early morning hours.

The fire broke out at the packed LGBT+ venue in Fenny Stratford during the early hours of the morning, prompting emergency responders to launch a major operation. Authorities reported no injuries from the incident, though thousands of onlookers gathered at the roadside to witness the flames.

Swift Evacuation and Emergency Response

Thames Valley Police emphasized that revellers were removed from Pink Punters quickly and effectively, with Chief Superintendent Emma Baillie stating that people evacuated during the critical early stages of the emergency. The force urged members of the public to refrain from speculating about the motive behind the incident.

Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service received the emergency call at 02:09 BST on Watling Street. At the height of the operation, 12 fire appliances were deployed to combat the rapidly spreading blaze. Crews remained at the scene for an extended period, working to extinguish remaining hotspots and prevent the fire from reigniting.

Eyewitness Accounts Paint Picture of Chaos

Molly Firman, a regular patron from Clophill, described the moment staff and security personnel began urgently directing guests to evacuate. "Out of nowhere all staff and security were screaming, 'you need to get out now'," she recounted. "Then [we were] all out on to the road and from the road looking over it felt like in minutes - it wasn't a small fire - but that fire expanded greatly."

Firman, who had visited the venue numerous times, characterised the experience as surreal. She expressed concern about the venue's future, stating: "When I think of going on a night out, that's pretty much the only place I will think of going. If Pink's was not to be here anymore, I think it would affect a lot of people."

Colin Ruggles, a 61-year-old resident living directly across from the nightclub, awoke at 03:00 to the acrid smell of smoke. "I opened up the lounge curtains just to be blasted with blue lights," he said. "When I put my head out the window, what a devastating scene I came across." Ruggles highlighted the venue's significance to the local LGBT+ community, questioning: "The LGBT community are going to be devastated, where else can they go within Milton Keynes to feel safe?"

Community Voices Express Devastation

Aaron Harding, who has worked as a cleaner at Pink Punters for the past five months, expressed his shock at the incident. He noted that approximately 100 people are employed at the venue. "I can't even imagine what the owners are feeling - what they're going through," he said, emphasizing that the establishment welcomes everyone in no matter your gender, race, ethnicity, all of it.

Political Response

Callum Anderson, the Labour MP for Buckingham and Bletchley, declared himself deeply concerned by the fire. He called for those responsible to feel the full force of the law, describing the incident as disgusting. Anderson pledged to coordinate with his team to work alongside police and venue owners to ensure appropriate support measures are implemented for the affected community.

Road closures remained in place following the incident, with authorities indicating they would persist for a considerable duration.
