Wicked Star Marissa Bode Accuses Southern Airways of Disability Discrimination After Flight Denial

Marissa Bode has publicly criticized Southern Airways following an incident in which she alleges the carrier refused to allow her to board a flight because of her wheelchair use. The Wicked performer shared her account of the situation via TikTok on Thursday, expressing her dismay over the experience.

The Incident

Bode explained that she was forced to utilize Southern Airways as a connecting flight due to limited alternatives to her final destination in a small Pennsylvania town. Upon arriving at the gate, the actress encountered difficulties locating her digital boarding pass and requested assistance from two airline employees.

According to Bode's recollection of the exchange, the staff members inquired whether she could stand. When she responded negatively, they informed her that boarding would be denied due to her wheelchair dependency.

"They proceeded to tell me all the planes within this airline have stairs to get on the plane," Bode recounted, adding that she questioned why the carrier had not updated its fleet to accommodate disabled passengers.

The actress characterized the airline's action as "blatant segregation" and highlighted the contradiction between the airline's stated policies and their prior assurances to her management team.

Prior Coordination

Notably, Bode's manager had contacted Southern Airways before booking the flight to confirm wheelchair accessibility accommodations. The airline reportedly provided verbal confirmation that such accommodations could be made.

According to Southern Airways' current contract of carriage, passengers must be capable of navigating multiple steps to board their aircraft. The airline notes that its planes carry 28 or fewer passengers and therefore fall outside requirements under the Air Carrier Access Act to provide mechanical lift devices.

Company Response

Following the viral spread of Bode's TikTok account, the director of Southern Airways' mobility department contacted her to address the matter. The executive expressed remorse over the incident and indicated the airline is conducting an internal investigation into how the denial occurred despite the prior telephone conversation with her representatives.

Bode acknowledged the airline's outreach in a subsequent video, noting that the director demonstrated understanding of her concerns. The carrier has committed to maintaining ongoing dialogue with Bode regarding potential improvements to their accessibility practices.
