Senior DHS Counterterrorism Official Suspended Over Allegations of Soliciting Funds from 'Sugar Daddies'
A prominent Department of Homeland Security counterterrorism official has been placed on administrative leave following claims that she sought substantial financial support from multiple wealthy benefactors, raising potential security concerns.
Julia Varvaro, 29, a Deputy Assistant Secretary at DHS, was suspended from her post as the agency investigates allegations documented in a formal complaint to the department's inspector general. The complaint was filed by a man identified as "Robert B," who claimed he spent approximately $40,000 on Varvaro during their three-month relationship that began after they connected on the dating application Hinge.
Details of the Allegations
According to the complaint reported by The Daily Mail on Wednesday, Robert alleged that Varvaro had created a profile on Seeking, a platform designed to facilitate arrangements between individuals seeking financial support and wealthy benefactors. Her profile reportedly emphasized "seductive sophistication."
In his submission to authorities, Robert described spending between $30,000 and $40,000 on expenses including vacations, luxury jewelry from Cartier, designer handbags, and shopping excursions. He stated:
"I did not want a sugar daddy/prostitution relationship, after spending $30,000-$40,000 for vacations, Cartier jewelry, expensive handbags, and various shopping trips."
Robert further noted that Varvaro had indicated she avoided student loan debt because sugar daddies had funded her university education, and he expressed concern that financial pressure may have motivated her actions, potentially creating a vulnerability from a security standpoint.
Official Response and Denials
A DHS spokesperson confirmed to The Independent:
"Varvaro is on administrative leave as a result of the investigation and she is no longer serving in her capacity as a Deputy Assistant Secretary at DHS."
Varvaro has contested the allegations, denying that she maintained an account on Seeking and asserting that her conduct was entirely appropriate. When speaking with The Daily Mail, she characterized the relationship as a conventional romantic partnership, stating:
"I didn't know it was bad to go on vacation with your boyfriend. We were together in an exclusive relationship. We went on vacations. I don't know what's the problem with that."
Professional Background
Varvaro assumed her senior position at DHS in May 2025, shortly after completing a degree in Homeland Security from St. John's University. She has maintained a visible profile within political circles, attending multiple MAGA-affiliated events and appearing in photographs alongside President Donald Trump.
Security Concerns
Marc Polymeropoulos, a retired CIA official, expressed concern about the case's implications for departmental security protocols. He remarked:
"Allegations of a sugar daddy relationship and unreported income from that relationship are serious issues for DHS security personnel that need to be resolved. I would be curious to see what kind of vetting was done."
The Independent has sought additional comment from Varvaro regarding the ongoing investigation.
