Tim Heidecker to Lead Creative Overhaul of Infowars Platform Under The Onion's Ownership

The satirical news outlet has secured a court-approved deal to transform the conspiracy website into a comedy streaming venture, with the "Tim and Eric" star serving as creative director.

Tim Heidecker initially contacted The Onion through his agent after learning the publication was pursuing acquisition of Infowars, the extremist media platform founded by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. Though his initial outreach went unanswered, the project resurfaced in October of the previous year with The Onion expressing interest in collaborating with Heidecker, who has performed parodies of Jones for years on his shows "Office Hours" and "On Cinema."

The Path to Acquisition

The Onion first explored taking over Infowars in 2024 following a court verdict favoring Sandy Hook families who sued Jones for defamation over his false claims regarding the 2012 school shooting. The legal judgment forced Jones and Infowars into bankruptcy, placing his assets under court supervision with proceeds designated for the affected families.

The acquisition faced delays due to legal challenges from Jones and competing prospective buyers. Under the current arrangement, which requires judicial approval, The Onion will pay a monthly licensing fee to the court-appointed administrator managing Infowars as part of the Sandy Hook settlement agreement.

"This is the culmination of a two-year-long effort to get some justice for the Sandy Hook families," Ben Collins, CEO of The Onion, stated on Monday. The outlet released its inaugural teaser content on Wednesday, featuring the defunct Onion News Network's former fictional host Jim Haggerty reimagined as a red-pilled independent podcaster styled after Tucker Carlson.

Heidecker's Vision for Transformation

When asked about his approach to overseeing a platform carrying significant negative associations, Heidecker emphasized the power of ridicule as a form of accountability. "I know in fact that families want this person to feel bad and hurt. A bit of retribution or justice and consequences for what he did, and I think the strongest way to do that is not through violence or anything like that—but just through laughing at somebody," he explained.

His ultimate objective extends beyond mocking Jones. "The initial radical thought I had was, 'Can you change what the word Infowars means to people?' Give it four years and suddenly it means something else," Heidecker stated.

Strategy and Structure

As creative director, Heidecker envisions the satirical phase as temporary before transitioning the platform into a legitimate comedy streaming venture. He views the project as an opportunity for The Onion to establish independent creative operations outside its traditional voice constraints.

"The Onion is such an institution—such a precious, sacred voice—but that makes it kind of limiting what they can do in comedy, because it really has to have The Onion voice if you're going to put something out with that brand on it," he noted. "They looked at this, and I saw it pretty much right away as The Onion making a new silo, a new department that can be free of the constraints of The Onion voice, but still play to the same Onion audience."

Heidecker has already hired Mia DiPasquale as development executive and head of programming. DiPasquale previously worked with him at Super Deluxe. The team has begun conducting meetings and outreach to potential collaborators, targeting both established personalities and emerging comedic voices.

Restoration and Curation Plans

Heidecker expressed interest in licensing and rescuing comedy projects that have disappeared from streaming platforms. He referenced his 2020 sitcom parody "Beef House," which he created with Eric Wareheim for Adult Swim and was subsequently removed from all platforms.

"We want to go out in Infowars and not only make a bunch of stuff, but license stuff and find stuff that gets haphazardly taken off of these streaming sites," Heidecker said, noting classics like "Space Ghost" as examples of content worth preserving.

Reception and Broader Philosophy

The announcement has generated overwhelmingly positive public response, with supporters celebrating the development as a positive outcome. Heidecker emphasized that his comedy universe appeals to audiences who view the world as absurd while maintaining empathy and progressive values—a combination he described as rare in contemporary comedy.

When asked whether he would adopt Jones's signature shirtless on-air presence, Heidecker responded with characteristic humor, noting he had conducted a recent CNN interview without a shirt, though it was not aired. "We'll see, but I am sure the shirt will come off at some point," he added.
