Audi’s desirable Concept C promises a return to form with more physical buttons and less reliance on screens. However, it’s unrealistic to expect Ingolstadt’s pledge to materialize overnight, as product development takes time. Before the electric sports car arrives next year and signals a new era, it’s business as usual for the Four Rings.

One of the “old guard” models Audi has been working to update is the Q4. The compact electric crossover has been on sale since 2021, so the timing is right for a mid-cycle refresh. While the exterior remains largely unchanged, the cabin brings notable changes that many will likely label a downgrade.

Yes, the physical climate-control buttons are gone from the center console. In the future, you’ll have to rely on the infotainment system’s 12.8-inch touchscreen, now housed together with the 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster. For an additional cost, the updated Q4 can be ordered with a 12-inch passenger screen. Audi claims it is a segment first and the largest passenger display the company has ever fitted.

While those changes are debatable, there are also some universally appreciated upgrades. The Q4 E-Tron is Audi’s first EV to feature bi-directional charging thanks to Vehicle-to-Load. V2L works through a household power socket mounted in the cargo area, turning the electric crossover into a mobile power bank capable of charging devices at up to 2.3 kW.

For an extra cost, customers can order an adapter for the side charging port that connects to either a domestic power socket (also 2.3 kW) or a more powerful camping power socket (3.6 kW). In certain markets, Audi will also offer Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) capability to power your house, particularly useful during a blackout as a backup energy solution.

The facelifted Q4 also brings slightly improved charging for the version equipped with the 82-kWh battery. It now supports 185 kW instead of the previous 175 kW, resulting in 112 miles (180 kilometers) of range after just 10 minutes. The battery pack can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 27 minutes.

Audi is also installing a more efficient rear electric motor and an updated transmission to reduce friction losses. Combined with improved software and further revisions to the electronics, these changes boost range by up to 20 miles (32 kilometers), depending on the version.

In its most efficient form, the Q4 can travel 368 miles (592 kilometers) on a single charge if you opt for the sleeker Sportback variant. At the other end of the lineup, the shortest-range configuration targets 280 miles (451 kilometers) between charges. All range figures are based on the WLTP test cycle.

Audi will start accepting orders for the Q4 E-Tron facelift in Europe next month, with deliveries beginning later in the summer.

Motor1's Take: Although it’s disappointing to see the removal of so many physical buttons, the Q4 E-Tron interior changes are hardly a surprise. Audi is aligning the electric crossover with the Q3 and other combustion-engine models. The larger Q7 and Q9, arriving later this year, will likely place similar emphasis on screens and less on traditional controls.

But there is a glimmer of hope that Audi will turn things around with the Concept C and the future models set to follow the targa-topped electric sports car. It’s not just about a return to more physical buttons, but also a higher-quality interior. Audi has acknowledged that cabin quality has declined and has promised to do better.
