Racing Against Time: Brothers Launch Marathon Quest to Combat Rare Dementia Before Symptoms Strike
Two brothers who carry the same genetic mutation linked to a devastating form of dementia are embarking on an extraordinary athletic challenge to raise awareness and funds for research into the condition that claimed their mother's life.
Jordan and Cian Adams, known as the 'FTD Brothers', are combining endurance sports with a deeply personal mission following their mother Geraldine's death from frontotemporal dementia at the age of 52. Both siblings have tested positive for the identical gene associated with the disease, turning their fitness endeavor into a race against time.
The Challenge Ahead
The brothers' campaign begins with the 2026 London Marathon, where Jordan will take on the grueling 42-kilometre course while carrying a 25-kilogram refrigerator. Immediately following this feat, the pair plan to accelerate their efforts by sprinting across all 32 counties of Ireland within a compressed 32-day timeframe.
Their ambitious physical undertaking serves a dual purpose: honoring the memory of their mother while simultaneously driving the search for medical breakthroughs that could intervene before genetic symptoms potentially manifest in their own lives.
A Race for Prevention
By combining their athletic capabilities with public visibility, Jordan and Cian Adams are attempting to transform personal tragedy into meaningful progress in dementia research and treatment development.
