There’s been a lot of talk lately that Tesla may well end up merging with SpaceX, and with both companies shifting more and more toward AI and its supportive infrastructure, perhaps that is now Elon Musk’s big plan. Of course, both Tesla and SpaceX have built their fortunes on other things. Tesla builds cars and deploys batteries, and SpaceX builds rockets and launches satellites. What has been a bit surprising lately, though, is just how many cars and batteries Tesla is selling to SpaceX and xAI….

A couple of weeks ago, I reported on the fact that “18% of Cybertruck registrations in the 4th quarter — 1,279 of them — were for SpaceX.” That added up to more than $100 million in sales. However, that wasn’t even close to the total amount of money SpaceX and xAI (now part of SpaceX) spent on Tesla vehicles last year.

“Tesla Inc. generated more than half a billion dollars in revenue last year from selling products to two of Elon Musk’s other companies, the carmaker disclosed in an amended annual filing,” Bloomberg reports. “The bulk of the sales — about $430.1 million — came from doing business with xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, Tesla first disclosed in January. In an amended filing uploaded Thursday, the automaker added that it also recognized another $143.3 million in revenue from the billionaire’s closely held rocket manufacturer SpaceX.”

xAI has been buying Tesla Megapacks (giant batteries). So, while many have been cheering on Tesla’s battery storage sales growth, keep in mind that $430.1 million of that in 2025 was from another Musk company. Meanwhile, Tesla has been integrating Grok (xAI’s chatbot) into its vehicles.

When in a tight situation at one of his companies, Musk has often leaned on — or just taken staff or stuff from — another company to help get through the trouble. SpaceX and Tesla have especially had numerous “joint work efforts.” Is this another case of that? I don’t know — Tesla makes a lot of money beyond these sales. That said, knowing how much difficulty Tesla has had selling Cybertrucks, it seems more likely than not that SpaceX bailed Tesla out a bit by buying so many of those.

Regarding Tesla Energy (its consumer battery and solar power division), it made $12.77 billion in revenue in 2025, so $430.1 million is just a few percent of that total. But Tesla isn’t done selling to its close cousin. It received another $78.1 million in revenue from xAI in the first two months of 2026.
