Sources close to the human rights activist say they suspect she had suffered a heart attack in prison and fear her transfer to hospital may be too late.

The Narges Mohammadi Foundation says the jailed activist was transferred from prison to hospital following a “catastrophic deterioration in her physical condition.”

Narges Mohammadi was detained on the sidelines of a protest rally in the city of Mashhad a few weeks before the nationwide anti-government demonstrations January kicked off. She was subsequently transferred to a prison in Zanjan.

Her supporters had been warning for months over her state of health, announcing in late March that she had suffered a suspected heart attack, but had not received adequate medical treatment.

Mohammadi's family have described her transfer to hospital as a “last-minute move” and expressed concern that it may have been done "too late".

“According to the neurologist, despite serious heart problems, addressing the neurological condition is now the clinical priority,” said Mustafa Nili, Mohammadi's attorney.

Narges Mohammadi, 53, has been detained in Iran many times over the past decades for her activism. She has become renowned for championing human rights in Iran and is often described by youths in anti-government demonstrations as a symbol of resistance.
