Call of Duty’s long-awaited Nintendo return comes with Modern Warfare 4 on Switch 2 this year

It’s finally happening. For the first time in 13 years, a new Call of Duty game will be available on a Nintendo console.

Later this year, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will launch on the Nintendo Switch 2, along with PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, marking the first CoD game on Nintendo since Call of Duty: Ghosts launched on the Nintendo Wii U way back in 2013.

In 2023, Microsoft and Activision announced a 10-year agreement to bring CoD to Nintendo platforms, and this is the first time it’s actually coming to fruition. Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7 have all released since, with Nintendo nowhere in sight.

I visited Infinity Ward’s studio last week to get a first look at MW4, including the game’s campaign and multiplayer offerings, and the devs confirmed that the new CoD will launch on the latest Nintendo handheld/console hybrid and is being developed “natively” for the new console by Digital Legends, in partnership with Infinity Ward.

The Spain-based Digital Legends has been around for a few decades, working mostly on mobile titles for several years, including 2024’s Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, but the studio also assisted on Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

I got to play MW4’s multiplayer for a few hours at the event, but that was on suped-up gaming PCs at 4K resolution. So the big question leading up to release is how CoD will look and play on Switch 2, especially considering the franchise has finally left last-gen consoles like PS4 and Xbox One behind for the new game. However, I do think that playing CoD on Switch 2 will at least feel natural, especially with the Pro Controller. Handheld mode may be a different story entirely, and one I’ll be paying attention to leading up to launch.

MW4 will launch for Switch 2, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on Oct. 23.
