Baldur's Gate 3 Director Swen Vincke Renowned for Relentless Pursuit of Excellence, Says Fallout Veteran
Former Obsidian designer Chris Avellone praises Larian Studios founder for his unwavering commitment to quality, even at significant cost.
Larian Studios has solidified its position as one of the industry's leading RPG developers, with Baldur's Gate 3 earning widespread recognition as 2023's Game of the Year. Much of this success is attributed to studio founder and CEO Swen Vincke, according to veteran game designer Chris Avellone.
Avellone, who collaborated with Vincke on Divinity: Original Sin 2 as a freelance contributor, recently shared insights into the studio head's approach to game development during a conversation with Fallout content creator TKs-Mantis. According to Avellone, Vincke maintains uncompromising standards across all of Larian's projects.
"Swen is an unstoppable machine," Avellone explained. "If a game comes out, it is incredibly important to him that it's at high quality, no matter what sacrifice it takes. He will have engines re-written to make sure that the quality is there." Avellone noted that this commitment to excellence has become instrumental in establishing Larian's reputation within the industry.
Avellone brings substantial credentials to his assessment. His design work spans several landmark titles, including serving as designer on Planescape: Torment, lead designer on Fallout 2, and senior designer on Fallout: New Vegas. He departed Obsidian in 2015 and has since contributed to projects including Prey and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
Vincke is currently directing development on Larian's next major title, an untitled Divinity game announced at last year's The Game Awards. Details remain limited beyond the reveal trailer, though The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley has indicated the upcoming RPG will surpass Baldur's Gate 3 in scope.
