Hearts Edge Past Hibernian in Epic Derby to Move Three Points Clear in Title Race

Late Spittal Strike Secures Dramatic Victory at Easter Road

Hearts have moved three points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership with four matches remaining after a stunning comeback victory against Hibernian at Easter Road. Blair Spittal's dramatic late goal earned the visitors a 2-1 triumph in a match that could prove pivotal in the championship battle.

The Edinburgh derby proved to be a monumental test of Hearts' character. Hibernian took the lead through Martin Boyle's clinical finish in the seventh minute, but their hopes of derailing the title challengers unraveled through self-inflicted wounds. Red cards for Sallinger and Felix Passlack left the hosts fighting with nine men for prolonged periods, yet they mounted a stubborn resistance that tested Hearts' resolve throughout.

Substitute Impact Changes the Course

Manager Derek McInnes's tactical intervention proved decisive. Introducing Sabah Kerjota from the bench, the substitute became instrumental in Hearts' turnaround. Kerjota's attacking play unlocked the Hibernian defense, first setting up the equalizer when his cross led to Warren O'Hora's own goal under pressure from Lawrence Shankland, then delivering the crucial pass for Spittal's winning goal with five minutes remaining.

The victory takes on added significance given Rangers' recent stumble. The first-split leaders lost at home to Motherwell, meaning Hearts now hold a commanding advantage in what has become a three-horse race with Celtic. A further victory at Tynecastle against Rangers would effectively end the Ibrox club's title hopes.

Extraordinary Late-Game Record

The result extends Hearts' remarkable record from the 83rd minute onwards in all league games this season. The team has accumulated 23 points from late goals and dramatic comebacks — an almost unfathomable statistic that showcases their ability to snatch victories when it matters most. Last-gasp winners and injury-time equalisers have become the hallmark of their campaign.

"The stakes were sky high, and the sense of frustration faced against Hibernian's dogged resistance was palpable throughout."

Derby Drama Unfolds

From kick-off, both teams engaged in a pulsating battle. Hearts controlled possession, registering 74% by half-time with 13 shots and 29 touches in the penalty area compared to Hibernian's two. Their attacking intent was relentless, yet accuracy suffered from the mounting pressure of the occasion.

Hibernian's resilience cannot be overlooked. Reduced to nine men, they continued to frustrate Hearts' advances, with goalkeeper Sallinger producing crucial saves before his dismissal and subsequent defending from deep proving remarkably effective. Only when Kerjota's introduction added fresh impetus did Hearts finally break through the resistance.

With four matches remaining, all winnable and all loseable, Hearts face Rangers next at their fortress Tynecastle. The question now posed to doubters is clear: do they finally believe in Hearts' capacity to end their championship drought?
