WHCA President Describes Shooting at White House Correspondents' Dinner as 'Harrowing Moment'
Weijia Jiang, president of the White House Correspondents Association and senior White House correspondent for CBS News, has characterized the shooting incident that occurred during Saturday's dinner as a deeply disturbing event that unfolded in front of thousands of attendees, including President Donald Trump.
In a statement posted to social media Sunday morning, Jiang described the overnight incident at the Washington Hilton as "a harrowing moment for everyone in attendance" and announced that the WHCA board would convene to evaluate the situation and chart a course forward.
Details of the Incident
According to reports, a 31-year-old suspect identified as Cole Tomas Allen breached security protocols at the beginning of the dinner and entered the Washington Hilton ballroom armed with multiple weapons. After discharging several rounds, law enforcement personnel neutralized the threat.
During the altercation, a law enforcement officer sustained a gunshot wound but was protected from more serious injury by body armor, according to statements made by President Trump at a subsequent White House news conference. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro indicated during a press briefing that the suspect faces charges related to firearm use and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon, with additional charges anticipated.
Response and Gratitude
In her comprehensive statement, Jiang expressed profound appreciation for the U.S. Secret Service and all law enforcement agencies involved, noting that their swift response "protected thousands of guests." She emphasized that all attendees, including President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance, remained unharmed.
"Last night's shooting at the Washington Hilton was a harrowing moment for everyone in attendance. We express our deepest gratitude to the U.S. Secret Service and all law enforcement personnel who ensured the safety of everyone in the ballroom and beyond."
Journalists' Response
Jiang highlighted the professional composure demonstrated by members of the press corps present at the event, noting that journalists "showed exactly the kind of calm and courage that work demands, jumping into reporting immediately after the incident unfolded." She characterized their actions as exemplifying the values the annual dinner seeks to honor.
Following the evacuation, Jiang addressed the remaining guests, relaying that law enforcement had requested the premises be cleared in accordance with established protocol. She also communicated that President Trump had indicated his intention to reschedule the event within the next 30 days.
Path Forward
In her Sunday morning statement, Jiang called for unity among WHCA members, stating "To the members of the WHCA, we will get through this together." The organization's board is expected to provide additional updates regarding next steps once their assessment is complete.
