Where to find Subnautica 2 Axum Bacterial Cultures
May 21, 2026: At the time of writing, Axum Bacterial Cultures can glitch outside the map when harvested. The best method I found to avoid this is to use an empty hand when breaking the ore, however, this isn't guaranteed to fix the problem. There are also only five Axum Bacterial Cultures available.
Axum Bacterial Cultures are among the last materials you'll find in Subnautica 2 early access, and they only appear in one blueprint - but it's a big one. When it comes to completing the campaign - or at least as it stands in EA, your final hurdle can be overcome with sheer determination and time, but it'll be a lot easier with a metal farm.
To craft said metal farm, you will need these Axum Bacterial Cultures - one for each farm module you want to build, and, appropriately, they are found in the existing alien metal farm location. Here's where to go and what to look out for when you get there.
Where to find Subnautica 2 Axum Bacterial Cultures
There are currently only five Subnautica 2 Axum Bacterial Cultures available, and they can all be found in the alien metal farm, found 860m north-northeast of the Alien Ruins Research Center, 450m below the surface.
They are found inside small, cage-like items found on the surface of toxic yellow pools, and somewhat resemble Subnautica 2 gold. When you break the cage with a Sonic Resonator or your hand, the axum bacterial culture will be left behind, and you must actively pick it up.
Latest Videos FromThere have been some reports that these items can disappear under the map when broken, and I experienced this myself. While I've read elsewhere that using the Sonic Resonator works more efficiently, I found that using my hand was the best option, using the Resonator didn't work, and using a heavy item to break the cage resulted in losing the item. To empty your hand of an item, you can press B on controller or press the hotbar number associated with your held item on keyboard.
Once you've secured that vital Axum Bacterial Culture (you need at least one), you can also use my guide on unlocking, building, and powering the Subnautica 2 Metal Farm.

She then honed her guides writing skills at PCGamesN between 2022 and 2026, when she took those skills to GamesRadar as a Guides Writer. Danielle's guides are a safe space - she definitely got stuck before you did, which is why she's perfect for the job. When she's not replaying the Silent Hill games or a more up-to-date single-player horror game, you'll find her fighting for her life in Dead by Daylight, tending to a garden in Stardew Valley, or doing both in Minecraft.
