We now know how many copies The Witcher 3 sold—let’s just say it’s no wonder a new DLC is coming

The Witcher 3 is, in my humble opinion, the best game ever made. Sure, some of y’all may find faults in it, such as its jank or simplistic combat, but it is as close to perfection as it can be, with probably the greatest story ever told in the history of the industry (and some of the best side quests ever, too).

And now CDPR has updated us with just how many copies the title has sold in its 11-year run: 65 million and counting. It’s a stunning number that’d make your head spin and also one that places The Witcher 3 firmly among the best-selling games of all time. It’s eighth, just behind Terraria, which, according to Wikipedia’s list, sold around 70 million copies to date.

The Witcher 3 launched in 2015, over 11 years ago now, and immediately became a pop culture sensation. It went on to win Game of the Year at The Game Awards (then still in its infancy) and became the most-awarded game of all time.

It had some tough competition that year, what with Kojima’s final project with Konami—Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain—and Bethesda’s Fallout 4 also bidding for the top spot at various award shows. Bloodborne had come out that year, too, as did Batman: Arkham Knight, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and many others.

Now that I recounted that, I’ve realized just how well we used to have it. Shame.

Anywho, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is also now getting a new expansion pack titled Songs of the Past. While we know next to nothing about it at the moment, it’s likely going to set us up for The Witcher 4 or create a contextual basis for its story as a sequel. It’s been 10 years since TW3 got its last DLC, Blood and Wine, itself crowned RPG of the Year in 2016, but now that I’ve seen the sales, I’m not surprised.

It is yet to be revealed if the DLC will be sold separately from the Game of the Year Edition, which already comes pre-packaged with both Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone, but even if it doesn’t, you can always pick it up for $9.99, which is probably the best deal you’ll ever get in gaming.

So, if you were looking for a reason to start your first The Witcher 3 campaign, or even if you’re going to play it for the umpteenth time, now’s probably a good moment to begin.
