U.S. Military Operates Bitcoin Node for Cybersecurity Testing, Admiral Confirms

A senior Pentagon official disclosed Wednesday that the American government currently maintains an active node on the Bitcoin network, though the primary objective centers on security experimentation rather than financial gain.

Admiral Samuel Paparo, who commands U.S. Pacific forces, revealed the government's Bitcoin involvement during testimony before the House Armed Services Committee. The admiral emphasized that while the military maintains network infrastructure on Bitcoin's blockchain, it is not engaged in cryptocurrency mining operations.

Network Testing and Security Focus

"We have a node on the Bitcoin network right now," Paparo told lawmakers. "We're not mining Bitcoin. We're using it to monitor, and we're doing a number of operational tests to secure and protect networks using the Bitcoin protocol."

The Bitcoin blockchain operates through tens of thousands of distributed nodes worldwide, which collectively maintain network security and validate transactions. This decentralized architecture represents a core innovation that distinguished Bitcoin from traditional financial systems when the cryptocurrency launched in 2009. The distributed structure ensures that no single entity—including nation states—can exercise unilateral control over the network.

The Admiral characterized the government's current engagement with Bitcoin as an "experimentation" phase, emphasizing that military interest focuses on technological applications rather than investment opportunities.

Bitcoin as a Technological Tool

"Our interest in Bitcoin is as a tool of cryptography, a blockchain, and a reusable proof-of-work—as an additional tool to secure networks, and to project power," Paparo explained. "From the military application standpoint, my interest in Bitcoin is as a computer science tool."

The disclosure of U.S. government participation in Bitcoin's network could provoke debate among cryptocurrency advocates, given Bitcoin's longstanding reputation for "censorship resistance"—a feature traditionally viewed as protection against interference by powerful nation states.

Stablecoins and Dollar Dominance

Paparo also addressed the geopolitical dimensions of cryptocurrency regulation. He indicated that maintaining global dominance of the U.S. dollar aligns with military strategic interests. The Admiral noted favorably on the GENIUS Act, legislation signed by President Donald Trump last summer that legalized stablecoin issuance by authorizing cryptocurrencies pegged to the dollar's value.

"That is a great step forward that moves us in that direction," Paparo stated regarding the stablecoin legislation's role in supporting American currency hegemony.
