Two More Suspects Detained in Counter-Terrorism Investigation Over Alleged Jewish Site Arson Plot
Authorities have taken two additional suspects into custody as part of an expanding counter-terrorism investigation linked to an alleged arson conspiracy targeting a Jewish community facility.
The Metropolitan Police's counter-terrorism unit arrested a 19-year-old man and a 26-year-old man in Watford on Tuesday, where they remain in police custody. This brings the total number of individuals apprehended over the past three days to nine, with seven others released on stringent bail conditions pending further investigation.
Investigation Scope Expands
Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, who coordinates counter-terrorism operations nationally, stated:
"We are continuing to identify and arrest suspects who we believe were involved, or planning, the recent arson attacks in north-west London."
The arrests stem from a series of incidents dating back to late March. The investigation encompasses multiple arson attacks throughout London that have specifically targeted Jewish community assets, including ambulances in Golders Green, two synagogues, and a former Jewish charitable organization. An additional incident involved a drone operated near the Israeli embassy.
Previous Arrests and Detentions
Earlier apprehensions include:
- Three men aged 24, 25, and 26 arrested in Harpenden, Hertfordshire on Sunday evening
- A 25-year-old man apprehended in Stevenage on Monday
- A 26-year-old man and two women aged 50 and 59 arrested near Birmingham on Monday
- A 39-year-old man held under the Terrorism Act since Tuesday, with detention authorized until 28 April
Police are also investigating an incident at Kensington Gardens on 17 April, where containers with a non-hazardous substance were discovered.
Enhanced Security Measures
Counter-terrorism officials have established an intensified police presence throughout north-west London, deploying both uniformed and plain-clothes officers. Enhanced patrols now operate outside Jewish synagogues, businesses, and other significant community locations to prevent further incidents and reassure residents.
Evans conveyed a stern message to potential offenders:
"My message to anyone even considering getting involved in this type of activity is this: the stakes are high and it is absolutely not worth the risk."
The investigation has resulted in a cumulative total of 25 arrests connected to these incidents.
