Trump Envoy Proposes Replacing Iran with Italy in Upcoming World Cup
A senior official in the Trump administration has reportedly requested that FIFA substitute Italy for Iran in the forthcoming World Cup tournament, according to Wednesday reports from the Financial Times.
The proposal reportedly aims to restore diplomatic relations between the American president and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, following tensions that emerged after Trump's controversial statements regarding Pope Leo in connection with the Iran conflict, sources told the British publication.
Paolo Zampolli, the US Special Envoy, acknowledged his involvement in advancing the initiative. "I can confirm that I have recommended to Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino that Italy take Iran's place at the World Cup," Zampolli stated to the Financial Times.
"As someone of Italian heritage, it would be an incredible opportunity to witness the Azzurri competing in a tournament hosted by the United States. Italy's four World Cup titles demonstrate they absolutely merit consideration for participation," he continued.
Officials from the White House, FIFA, Italy's Football Federation (FIGC), and Iran's Football Federation (FFIRI) have not yet provided statements in response to inquiries about the proposal. The announcement comes as tensions between Trump and Meloni have escalated over the administration's Middle East policies and their impact on Vatican relations.
