Donald Trump held a final round of meetings with Xi Jinping on Friday as his state visit to China entered its last day. The talks took place at Zhongnanhai, the Chinese Communist Party’s leadership compound beside the Forbidden City in Beijing.
… MoreThe two leaders walked through the compound’s gardens before holding private talks focused on trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and the war in Iran.
Donald Trump said his summit with Xi Jinping had resulted in “fantastic trade deals”, claiming that China was prepared to increase imports of American goods including Boeing aircraft, soybeans and oil. However, no detailed agreements were released and Chinese officials did not immediately confirm the figures announced by Trump.
Speaking after the talks in Beijing, Xi described the discussions as “candid and constructive” and called for “stable and predictable” relations between the world’s two largest economies. He also warned against confrontation over sensitive issues including Taiwan and the South China Sea.
Trump also announced that Xi had accepted an invitation to visit the White House on 24 September. The invitation was extended during a state banquet held at the end of the summit.
The Beijing visit, Trump’s first trip to China since returning to office, came after months of tariff disputes and rising strategic tensions between Washington and Beijing. Chinese and US officials said both sides supported efforts to reopen and secure shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, where traffic has dropped to a fraction of pre-war levels since the Iranian conflict disrupted global energy flows.
