Trump Claims Diplomatic Victory as Iran Reportedly Spares Eight Women from Execution

The U.S. president announced Wednesday that Tehran has agreed to release female protesters who were allegedly facing capital punishment, though Iranian officials dispute the claims.

President Donald Trump declared on Wednesday afternoon that the Iranian government has consented to spare eight female protesters from execution. Taking to Truth Social, the Republican leader stated: "Very good news. I have just been informed that the eight women protestors who were going to be executed tonight in Iran will no longer be killed." According to Trump's statement, four of the women will be freed immediately, while the remaining four will complete an additional month of incarceration.

The president's announcement followed his previous day's social media posts featuring photographs of the women, which included assertions they faced capital punishment. Trump had called on Iran's leadership to release them as a gesture of goodwill to facilitate upcoming U.S.-Iran peace negotiations.

However, Iranian officials have contested Trump's characterization of the situation. "Trump was misled once again by fake news," read a statement published on Iran's judiciary website. The statement further claimed that while some of the women have been released, others face charges that would result in imprisonment rather than execution if convictions are confirmed.

According to reporting by The Times, human rights organizations have documented that only one woman, Bita Hemmati, had received a death sentence. Hemmati reportedly took part in anti-government demonstrations in January.

Iran's Islamic theocracy, governed by hardline clerical leaders, has faced sustained international condemnation from the United Nations and human rights advocates for documented abuses, including extrajudicial killings and the detention of dissidents.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt praised the announcement on Wednesday afternoon during an appearance on Fox News, crediting Trump's diplomatic capabilities. "Only President Trump could save the lives of these eight beautiful Iranian women, who he has received direct word from the Iranian regime, or what's left of it, that their lives are going to be spared," she remarked, characterizing the president as fundamentally humanitarian.

The reported outcome represents a continuation of Trump's recent diplomatic efforts regarding Iran. On Wednesday, the president extended an Iran ceasefire agreement just hours before the initial two-week arrangement was set to expire. An earlier round of negotiations held in Pakistan involving Vice President JD Vance had collapsed after a single day of talks.

Despite the military pause, tensions persist in the region. The strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20 percent of the world's petroleum supply transits, remains subject to competing blockades imposed by Washington and Tehran.

The broader conflict has resulted in thousands of casualties throughout the Middle East, claiming thirteen American military personnel, while simultaneously generating concerns about potential worldwide economic disruption. Public opinion surveys indicate that most Americans oppose military action in the region, with only 38 percent supporting strikes against Iran according to a Politico poll from earlier this month.
