Trump Approves Toxic Mining on Doorstep of Boundary Waters

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Donald Trump signed off on a controversial proposal to allow toxic sulfide mining in the watershed of one of the country’s most visited wilderness areas.
Trump signed a Congressional Review Act Resolution overturning a 20-year ban on mining in the Superior National Forest in Minnesota, which contains the headwaters of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
The CRA only allows Congress to disapprove of administrative rules. No previous administration has considered mineral withdrawals to be “rules” that are subject to the CRA.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Loren Blackford released the following statement:
“Donald Trump is selling out one of the country’s most iconic wilderness areas to boost the bottom line of a foreign mining company. For generations, Americans have enjoyed the pristine wilderness of the Boundary Waters, but thanks to Trump, the next generation may inherit lands and waters desecrated by toxic pollution and industrial development. Again and again, the Trump administration is putting corporate polluters over our environment, health, and public lands, but we will not stop fighting back.”
