White House Photo of Women's Tennis Team Sparks Backlash Over Male-Dominated Composition
A commemorative photograph from the White House has drawn widespread criticism online for its questionable staging, which positioned six men, including President Donald Trump, prominently in front of the University of Georgia's championship-winning women's tennis team.
The image, shared by White House communications staffer Margo Martin, depicted the female athletes standing behind the men, with Trump positioned on an elevated step. The post carried the caption "Congratulations, Georgia Women's Tennis!" but quickly became the subject of ridicule across social media platforms.
Online Criticism Intensifies
Social media users were swift to highlight what many perceived as poor judgment in the photo's composition. One commenter wrote: "The official White House X account celebrates a women's collegiate athletic team by placing them directly behind six smiling men. Gee, thanks, Mr. President."
Another critic expressed stronger sentiments, stating: "Whomever from the WH comms team that approved this photo composition should be immediately fired. It's so egregiously bad that it's an assault on good sensibility."
The backlash continued with users making pointed observations. One individual quipped: "Can you hear the congratulations back there?" while another sarcastically suggested: "Me when I definitely respect women's sports teams: what if we put them behind us so you can barely see them."
Some commenters drew connections to Trump's stated positions on athletics, with one user noting: "I thought y'all were all about keeping men out of women's sports," referencing the president's commitment to preventing transgender athletes from competing in female sporting events.
Trump's Comments on the Victory
The Georgia Bulldogs women's tennis team was among several NCAA championship-winning teams invited to the White House on Tuesday for a celebratory event. When addressing reporters about the Bulldogs and other victorious squads, Trump offered his own remarks about their achievement.
"What a great job. That's not easy, winning in tennis," the president stated. "That's a tough thing to do. I play tennis a little bit, not quite at that level, not quite, but that's a great achievement."
