Trump and Administration Officials Were 'Likely' Targets of Press Dinner Shooting Suspect, Says Acting Attorney General

US President Donald Trump and members of his administration were the apparent intended targets of a gunman who opened fire at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington DC on Saturday, according to acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche.

The 31-year-old suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, was apprehended after authorities said he discharged a firearm near a security checkpoint during the event held at a Washington Hilton hotel. Speaking to NBC News, Blanche indicated that while investigators are still determining the shooter's exact motivations, preliminary evidence points to administration officials as his intended targets.

Details of the Incident

Gunfire erupted around 20:35 local time on Saturday in the hotel's foyer, forcing Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice-President JD Vance to be evacuated from the ballroom by Secret Service agents. Law enforcement returned fire at the suspect and took him into custody without him being struck. He was subsequently transported to a hospital for medical evaluation.

Police discovered that Allen was carrying two firearms and multiple knives at the time of arrest. An officer sustained injuries during the confrontation but was protected by body armor, according to Secret Service chief of communications Anthony Guglielmi, who stated the vest "helped us avoid a potential tragedy."

Investigation Findings

The FBI's criminal division and terrorism task force are handling the investigation. A senior US official told CBS News that investigators have reviewed writings from the suspect expressing his intention to target administration officials specifically. One of Allen's family members alerted authorities after receiving such writings prior to the attack, though these documents apparently did not reference the press dinner.

According to Blanche, the suspect travelled to the capital by train, departing from Los Angeles with stops in Chicago before reaching Washington DC. Allen, who is from Torrance, California, identifies himself on LinkedIn as a mechanical engineer, game developer, and teacher. He attended the California Institute of Technology for mechanical engineering studies. Authorities are conducting searches at a residential address in the Torrance area connected to him.

Trump's Response and Broader Context

Following the shooting, Trump addressed journalists at the White House while in formal attire, praising the Secret Service and calling them deserving of "tremendous debt of gratitude." He also acknowledged the press's coverage of the incident and urged Americans to "resolve our differences peacefully."

During an interview with Fox News on Sunday, Trump stated that the suspect "had a lot of hatred in his heart for a while" and referenced that the family was aware of his "difficulties." Trump also mentioned that the suspect had prepared a "manifesto."

The president used the occasion to renew his proposal for constructing a new ballroom at the White House, posting on Truth Social that such an incident "would not have happened with the Militarily Top Secret Ballroom currently under construction."

Official Responses

White House Correspondents' Association president Weijia Jiang, who was seated beside Trump at the dinner, described the attack as "harrowing." On Sunday, she commended the Secret Service for actions that "protected thousands of guests" and announced that the association's board would meet to determine next steps.

In a statement, the White House characterized Trump as standing "fearless" following the "assassination attempt when shots were fired."

Legal Proceedings and International Reaction

Allen faces federal charges of assault of a federal officer and using a firearm during a crime of violence, with formal charges expected to be filed in federal court on Monday.

International leaders have condemned the incident. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed shock, stating that "any attack on democratic institutions or on the freedom of the press must be condemned in the strongest possible terms." Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was "relieved" that those present remained safe, while Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed satisfaction that attendees were unharmed.

Historical Context

This marks the third assassination threat Trump has faced. A bullet grazed his ear in July 2024 at a Pennsylvania rally in Butler, and in September 2024, a suspected gunman was discovered in bushes at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida. This was Trump's first attendance at the White House Correspondents' Dinner as president; he last attended in 2011 as a private citizen.
