Three Contenders, Two Spots: WSL 2 Promotion Battle Reaches Climactic Final Day
The race for automatic promotion from the Women's Super League second tier will be decided on Saturday as Birmingham City, Crystal Palace, and Charlton Athletic fight for just two available spots.
With only one round of matches remaining in WSL 2, the promotion picture has become increasingly complex. Following a stunning 3-0 defeat to mid-table Ipswich Town on Sunday, Birmingham saw their hopes of securing a comfortable path to the top flight slip away, leveling on 41 points with Crystal Palace. Meanwhile, Charlton Athletic currently occupy the summit with 42 points after an dramatic 2-2 draw against Southampton.
The Final Day Scenario
The decisive fixtures take place on Saturday, 2 May at 15:00 BST, with promotion being decided on goal difference if necessary. Birmingham will face Charlton in a direct head-to-head encounter, while Crystal Palace host already-relegated Portsmouth at home.
Charlton, currently in first place, will secure automatic promotion with any result short of a loss. Should they fall to defeat, they can still advance if Palace simultaneously suffer a loss. Birmingham require either victory or a draw combined with a Palace stalemate to go up. Palace's path to promotion involves either a win or a draw coupled with a Charlton defeat.
The situation becomes significantly more complicated if Birmingham and Palace achieve identical results—in such cases, the Blues hold a crucial seven-point advantage in goal difference.
Background to the Promotion Expansion
This unprecedented three-way battle stems from significant structural changes approved last June. The Women's Super League voted to expand from 12 to 14 teams beginning in the 2026-27 season, allowing three teams to gain promotion from the second tier instead of the traditional single promotion spot that had been the norm since the 2019-20 campaign.
Notably, this represents the second consecutive season in which Birmingham have found themselves involved in a final-day winner-takes-all fixture. Last season, they drew with London City Lionesses when victory would have propelled them into the top flight at the Lionesses' expense.
Second-Tier Shake-Up
Away from the promotion battle, Portsmouth's relegation to National League South was confirmed following Birmingham's defeat. They will be replaced by three ascending clubs, with Burnley securing the National League Northern Premier Division title and Watford winning the Southern Premier Division, both earning automatic promotion to WSL 2.
The runners-up from each division—Wolverhampton Wanderers and Plymouth Argyle—will compete in a promotion play-off match in Burton on Monday, 4 May at 13:00 BST to determine the final available spot in the second tier.
