'ZDNET Recommends': What exactly does it mean?

ZDNET's recommendations are based on many hours of testing, research, and comparison shopping. We gather data from the best available sources, including vendor and retailer listings as well as other relevant and independent reviews sites. And we pore over customer reviews to find out what matters to real people who already own and use the products and services we’re assessing.

When you click through from our site to a retailer and buy a product or service, we may earn affiliate commissions. This helps support our work, but does not affect what we cover or how, and it does not affect the price you pay. Neither ZDNET nor the author are compensated for these independent reviews. Indeed, we follow strict guidelines that ensure our editorial content is never influenced by advertisers.

ZDNET's editorial team writes on behalf of you, our reader. Our goal is to deliver the most accurate information and the most knowledgeable advice possible in order to help you make smarter buying decisions on tech gear and a wide array of products and services. The Motorola Moto G is a solid, budget-friendly smartphone that gives you all the features you want at a fraction of the price of flagship devices from Apple and Samsung. And right now, when you buy directly from Motorola, you can get a Moto Tag 4-pack and a pair of Moto Buds Plus earbuds for free. All you have to do is add the Moto G to your cart, and the Motorola website will take care of the rest.

The Moto G's 6.7-inch display is capable of 1604 x 720 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate for a clean, clear picture while streaming or making video calls. And with a maximum brightness of 1,000 nits, you'll get great visibility in sunlight and bright rooms. The integrated speakers work with Dolby Atmos for virtual surround sound and enhanced audio while listening to music or streaming video.

The Moto G got a camera system refresh with a 50MP main and 2MP ultrawide lens, as well as better color balancing for more true-to-life images. It's built with the same MediaTek Dimensity 6300 processor as the previous model, but includes a RAM boost feature for better performance when you need it. The only storage option is 128GB, but you can expand that with up to a 1TB microSD card if you need more space.

The biggest draw for the Motorola Moto G is the battery life, offering up to 24 hours of use on a full charge and up to two days of standby time. It also supports fast charging, where just 30 minutes of charging will give you hours of use. This makes it an almost perfect companion for busy students and professionals, as well as outdoors enthusiasts who need a long-lasting battery that doesn't take forever to top up.

How I rated this deal

A high-quality smartphone for under $500 is already a steal, but getting free earbuds and tracking tags makes for an even sweeter deal. The Motorola Moto G features a 6.7-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate and max brightness of 1,000 nits, a 2-day battery life, and Dolby Atmos support for streaming. The 4-pack of Moto Tags will help you keep track of your most valuable belongings, while the Moto Buds Plus earbuds keep you entertained on commutes. That's why I gave this deal a 5/5 Editor's rating.
