‘There will be blood, and it will not be a paid DLC’: Ubisoft already scrambling to course-correct on Black Flag remake

AssCreed Black Flag Resynced

Ubisoft recently revealed its worst-kept secret: Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, and it actually landed surprisingly well with audiences. The game soared to the top of pre-order charts across several platforms, which alone seems to indicate a bright future for the remake. However, many noticed an overt lack of blood and an overemphasis on certain "videogame-y" sound effects, which Ubisoft is already addressing.

The Black Flag Resynced trailer features several combat scenes where Edward Kenway fights his way through numerous groups of soldiers and other pirates. It showed how Ubisoft reimagined the combat system for the remake, as well as displayed how different it is compared to the original. And it looked really good. It doesn't overtly rely on counter-finisher chains like the 2013 release and actually asks the player to involve themselves in the fight, having to carefully deflect and outmaneuver enemies.

However, whereas the original game had blood splattering everywhere whenever Edward hit them with basically anything, the trailer for Resynced seems to have completely disabled the thing. Whether this was done to preserve a particular rating or to avoid certifications, I have no clue, but Ubisoft is already addressing criticisms based on this lack of crimson. "There will be blood," Resynced producer Justin Ng said, and he wasn't talking about the incredible 2007 film either.

"It will not be a paid DLC," he added to immediately dispel surprisingly warranted sentiments players had considering Ubisoft's track record (and that of other AAA corporate publishers). Furthermore, Ng said that other aspects that were particularly criticized, like the sound effects during combat, are being touched up as well. "We hear the feedback on the VFX and audio cues on fight. It's being toned down," he said.

It's good to see Ubisoft taking notice of player feedback months ahead of release, instead of just following the usual corporate schtick of releasing the game and worrying about "fixes" after the fact, usually never fixing the things in question at all. Resynced, while seeming a little floaty to me and lacking in feedback compared to the original, is a promising remake, though we'll know for sure when it releases on July 9 this year.
