Their time has come: Warzone is leaving PS4 and XBOX One this year

Well, I guess everything must end eventually. Call of Duty Warzone is officially going to drop support for 8th-gen consoles, i.e., the PS4 and XBOX One, later this year. Warzone has been online on the consoles since 2020, but is now leaving together with future CoD releases.

Activision confirmed the news today via a dedicated blog post. Since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 won’t release on the previous generation of consoles, Warzone will have to follow suit due to its integration process with whichever CoD is currently the latest.

“Starting June 4, we will begin reducing the services offered for Call of Duty: Warzone on PlayStation 4 and XBOX One, with support for the game on these platforms coming to an end later this year,” Activision wrote.

The game will remain operational until the end of Black Ops 7‘s Season 6, with new downloads going offline on June 4. Players who already have Warzone in their libraries will be able to continue playing and installing the game until the end of the mentioned season.

Activision will introduce ways to carry over COD Points to current-gen consoles, primarily because many of these transactions are tied to platform accounts (i.e., your PSN account) rather than the console itself. This, however, means that carrying stuff over will mostly require you to own a related console, such as a PS5, if you’ve owned the game on PS4.

Stuff you’ve already bought with COD Points is, on the other hand, tied to your Activision account, so that should translate to any platform of your choosing.

Furthermore, only Warone will be affected. Previous CoD titles shall remain playable on the PS4 and XBOX One, though do not expect the franchise to branch out to those consoles in the future. Eighth-generation consoles have run their course, and it’s high time publishers started switching to newer, more capable hardware (which is itself already six years old).
