THE BREAKDOWN

  • BeamNG.drive was originally released in 2015 and has grown significantly since then.
  • The game features realistic soft-body physics to simulate vehicle handling and damage.
  • Previously available only on consoles, BeamNG will now be available to PlayStation 5 users.

BeamNG has been the crash-physics GOAT for just over a decade now. But the game is far more than the random bits of brain-rot that flow across your algorithm. In fact, BeamNG delivers an amazingly well-rounded and diverse amount of car-based gameplay.

Since its official launch in 2015, BeamNG has been available on Windows and Linux. Console players have only been able to enjoy the game from afar by watching numerous videos across YouTube and social media.

Until now... because BeamNG is finally coming to the PlayStation 5. Watch the official announcement video below:

The Secret Of BeamNG's Physics Model

As many gamers know, BeamNG is the go-to simulator for real-ish crash physics—and its creators know that's part of what makes it so addicting. As BeamNG CEO Thomas Fischer notes:

'In BeamNG.drive, every component of the vehicle is simulated individually as a network of nodes and beams that can flex under load, deform, or even break outright when pushed too far. As a result, vehicle behavior is never scripted, but emerges from those tiny interactions, allowing the game to produce true-to-life handling dynamics with incredibly accurate damage modeling. And all of it happens really fast—the physics engine updates at a rate of 2kHz—meaning the vehicle is being fully re-evaluated two thousand times every second.'

This allows the game to ensure that the physics are in response to what's happening on screen. You're not simply staring at a cut-scene with pre-planned footage. You are the one making the on-screen action happen, and it will be different every time you put the vehicle into different situations.

The game itself is extremely well-suited to modification and add-ons. Players can create all sorts of vehicles, especially since BeamNG allows users to import vehicles built in the Automation car-creation game.

Do you want a sandbox to smash your toys together? Go for it. Prefer to see how modifications might affect your drag-race times? You can do that. Would you like a chill, car-cruising game where you go on multiplayer drive routes across fictional landscapes? Have fun.

If you own a PlayStation 5, you too can now join in on the fun sometime later this year.

Motor1's Take: BeamNG is ridiculously fun. Opening access to PlayStation 5 owners means that even more users will get access to the simulator.
