Genshin Impact to Finally Unveil Snezhnaya, Its Last Major Region, After Six Years of Development
HoYoverse has announced that the long-awaited reveal of Snezhnaya, the final confirmed region in Genshin Impact's expansive world of Teyvat, will take place on April 24 through a behind-the-scenes livestream. The release of this Russia-inspired region is expected to arrive later in the fall, marking a significant milestone for the open-world RPG more than five years after its September 2020 launch.
The developer confirmed the reveal through social media announcements on April 22, 2026, stating that the special presentation "Behind the Scenes of Genshin Impact 'To Snezhnaya and the Future'" will air at 08:00 UTC-4. Preview images shared by HoYoverse showcase Snezhnayan landscapes and the region's distinctive symbol—towering spires characteristic of Russian architecture—continuing the game's pattern of basing regions on real-world cultures and geography.
A Billion-Dollar Investment Reaches Completion
The development of Genshin Impact represents one of the most expensive video game projects ever undertaken. Court documents released in 2023 revealed that the game cost approximately $100 million to develop initially, with an additional $200 million annually allocated for expansion and maintenance. Conservative estimates suggest total development spending has exceeded $1 billion, placing it in the same financial category as the rumored budget for the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6.
This substantial investment underscores the scale of HoYoverse's commitment to the project, particularly given the company's significant expansion since Genshin Impact's initial release and rising industry-wide development costs.
Snezhnaya Completes the Teyvat Journey
The Snezhnaya region will serve as the culmination of the Traveler character's planned journey through Teyvat's major territories. The newest playable region, Nod-Krai, currently accessible to players, draws inspiration from Baltic and Nordic aesthetics and mythology, while the previously released region Natlan incorporated cultural elements from Africa and Latin America. Snezhnaya's visual design similarly reflects Russian influences through its architectural and environmental styling.
Looking Beyond Snezhnaya
While the Snezhnaya arc will extend into 2027, the "future" aspect of the announcement suggests that HoYoverse has plans extending well beyond this region's completion. The company's statement reassures the player base that development will continue long-term, indicating Genshin Impact's lifecycle will not conclude with Teyvat's exploration.
Community speculation about the game's post-Snezhnaya direction has grown increasingly focused on otherworldly and celestial narrative elements already woven into the story. The game's central premise—the Traveler's journey between worlds in pursuit of a separated sibling—leaves narrative room for exploration beyond Teyvat itself. However, given HoYoverse's track record of drawing from earthly cultures and the company's portfolio of other projects exploring different genres and settings, Genshin Impact is likely to maintain its fantasy roots regardless of its next destination.
