The Kid-Friendly Mexico Resort That Lets Adults Have Their Vacation, Too

Wedding weekends are a good test of any resort. A family I met at Dreams Bahia Mita Surf & Spa Resort in Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit was there for exactly that kind of trip: a multigenerational group of relatives and friends, all traveling together but wanting slightly different versions of a vacation. Some stayed on the family-friendly side of the resort; others chose the quieter, adults-only spaces next door; and everyone seemed glad not to be trapped in a one-size-fits-all setup. That’s one of the many things that Dreams Bahia Mita gets right.
This flexibility comes from the combined layout of Dreams and Secrets Bahia Mita, which together make the resort feel much more versatile than the average family-friendly all-inclusive. The adjoining resorts have one entrance but two separate lobbies for check-in, while an imaginary line down the middle of the property separates the rooms and amenities of each. The clever trick for mixed groups is that guests who book rooms on the Secrets side also have access to all of the Dreams amenities, while the adults-only Secrets spaces remain peacefully kid-free.
Once you understand that one rule, the rest of the stay becomes easier to plan: book the side that matches your personal vacation vision, use Dreams as the fun and social hub, and build in adults-only breaks as needed.
Book the side that matches your trip

Set on Banderas Bay about 45 minutes northwest of Puerto Vallarta, Dreams Bahia Mita has a sprawling footprint designed by the Mexican architecture firm Sordo Madaleno. The layout is part of the appeal and, at first, the main learning curve. From the beach, the resort climbs upward in successive stacked terraces, which gives the property its rooftop pools, outdoor seating areas, and views over the grounds. It also means the elevators take a little getting used to. By day two, I had mostly figured it out. Until then, the elevators became an easy place for guests to trade directions and laugh about getting off at the wrong floor.
The rooms at Dreams Bahia Mita and Secrets Bahia Mita are all suites, and the design is similar on both sides of the resort. That makes the first room decision less about the view and more about access: do you want to stay on the family-friendly Dreams side, or would you rather have the adults-only benefits of Secrets while still being able to use the Dreams amenities?
Suites have either one king bed or two queen beds, plus a private balcony. The design is clean and warm, with medium-tone wood, neutral finishes, luxurious bedding, and enough space to make the room feel comfortable for more than sleeping and showering. Bathrooms are partially separated from the main room by a sliding barn door and include a separate toilet room, double sinks, and a large glass-walled shower that looks through to the bedroom through a patterned metal lattice. It gives the room a more open layout, though travelers who prefer total bathroom privacy may want to keep that design detail in mind.

For families, the Dreams side is the practical choice. It keeps you closer to the waterpark, kids club, teen zone, family pools, and casual dining around the main activity areas. It’s also the better fit if your group expects to spend most of the day together and wants the easiest access to kid-focused spaces. Dreams rooms are often more affordable than rooms on the Secrets side, which can make them a strong value for families and larger groups.
For adults traveling alone or as part of a larger family group, wedding, or reunion, Secrets can be the smarter booking. Guests on the Secrets side have access to Dreams, so they can still join the rest of the group for meals, activities, or time at the waterpark, then return to adults-only spaces when they want a quieter break. That setup is what makes the combined resort especially useful for mixed-age trips: the room you book determines how much of an escape you have built in from the start.
Preferred Club is also worth weighing, especially for adults staying on the Dreams side. Among other amenities and upgraded room categories, it adds access to the adults-only rooftop Skybar and Preferred Club pool, which looks out over the resort and feels quite exclusive. If you want the convenience of Dreams with a more grown-up version of the experience, Preferred Club is the upgrade I would look at first.
The dining is a true highlight

Dining is one of the biggest surprises at Dreams Bahia Mita. The meals feel a step above the usual all-inclusive rotation, with strong breakfasts, several standout dinners, and casual options around the waterpark that are convenient and kid-focused but still appealing for adults.
World Café, the main breakfast buffet, has the range expected from a large resort, but the number of made-to-order stations is impressive. For families and large groups, it’s an easy win: picky eaters, early risers, and people who want a full breakfast can all make it work.
Dinner makes the strongest case against the idea that all-inclusive dining has to feel generic. Meraki’s Teppanyaki Experience is more inventive than resort teppanyaki usually is, with excellent food and a genuinely entertaining show. Portofino, the adults-only Italian restaurant on the Dreams side, is another highlight, with attentive service and a menu that feels well above standard all-inclusive expectations.
Dreams and Secrets’ Unlimited-Luxury all-inclusive program includes 24-hour room service for all guests, not only those in upgraded room categories. On my final morning, I was torn between ordering in and returning to the breakfast buffet, which says a lot about how good the buffet was. I chose room service and did not regret it: the menu had plenty of options, delivery was prompt, and everything arrived at the right temperature.
Choose your pool, slide, beach chair, or cabana

The beach is clean and sandy, though rocky in sections. While the resort has ample pools, the beach is equally popular for lounging, surfing, paddle boarding, or booking a cabana. Surfers were out each morning into the afternoon, from experienced riders to people taking the complimentary on-site clinic. Beachfront cabanas with plunge pools are available to rent, and regular loungers with umbrellas line the sand.
The waterpark is the clearest example of how Dreams handles families well and is more than just an area of slides dropped beside the resort. Seating lines the edges of the pools, giving parents a clear view without requiring them to stand in the splash zone all day. An open-air gallery of casual eateries sits nearby, including a taco truck, a grill, and an ice cream stand, alongside a full-service bar. Younger kids clustered around the pirate ship with parents close by, while older kids made the slides and pools their territory.
Adults staying at Dreams should look first to the pools in the center of the resort or, if they have access, the Preferred Club pool. The latter is my favorite because it offers a view over the resort and a tucked-away setting for your pool time.
For groups that want a more private pool day, cabanas for Dreams and Secrets are available for an additional fee, with some VIP rooftop options sized for six to 10 guests and set up with two Bali beds, lounge seating, a dining area, and a plunge pool.
There’s more to do than swim and sun

The activity programming at Dreams Bahia Mita goes beyond the usual daily resort schedule. I took a pickleball class with Rafael, a former tennis instructor who now teaches pickleball with the patience of someone who has taught students of every skill level, including people like me who had never held a paddle before.
Families also have access to a kids club for ages 3 to 12 and a separate teen zone, which helps the resort work for families beyond the pool-and-waterpark routine and allows parents to build in their own time.
The zipline circuit, available for an additional fee to guests ages 8 and up, was far more adventurous than I expected. The 90-minute course includes two ziplines, hanging bridges, a zip bike, and a free-fall rappelling drop at the end. I can see it being a trip highlight for adventurous kids and teens.

On the other end of the energy spectrum, the spa is the resort’s best architectural feature and the perfect place to wind down. I tried the 90-minute hydrotherapy circuit, but the design of the space stayed with me as much as the treatment itself. Open-air post-treatment relaxation areas wrap around a central water feature, where water falls down the walls of an open oculus into a sculpture garden below.
The sound of the water gives the spa a built-in white noise machine, even though it sits at the center of the large property. At night, projections turn the fountain into an immersive art show, visible from the elevated walkway over the spa and from terraces above.
Getting to Dreams Bahia Mita
Dreams Bahia Mita is about 45 minutes away from Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) by car. The resort partners with Amster for private transfers, which guests can book in advance for ease, especially for families or groups traveling with lots of people and luggage.
Private transfers can also be arranged through several independent operators. Taxis are available at the airport, though it’s best practice to agree on a price with the driver before departing. Rideshares are also an option (although they can be inconsistent outside of Puerto Vallarta property). If you plan to explore Riviera Nayarit’s beaches and towns beyond the resort, consider renting a car. ![]()
