Tesla recalls some Cybertrucks over fears the wheels will fall off: report

Tesla is recalling its economy RWD Cybertrucks over fears the wheels might fall off, according to a new report.

The company that made Elon Musk a household name — Tesla — is recalling 173 of it's RWD Cybertruck Long Range vehicles due to faulty break rotors that could cause the wheels to dislodge from the vehicle, according to a MotorTrend report.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a notice announcing the recall, saying the vehicles' “brake rotor stud holes may crack and allow the stud to separate from the wheel hub.”

Affected vehicles may vibrate or produce noise prior to wheel stud separation, but the cracking may be undetected, according to the notice.

Tesla said in a statement that it is “not aware of any collisions, fatalities, or injuries” related to the issue at the heart of the recall.

The Cybertruck has been the subject of, at this point, nearly a dozen recalls, according to The Verge. The trucks' accelerator, trim, inverter, reverse cameras, and font size have all been the subject of recalls across various models.

The RWD — rear-wheel drive — model was launched in April 2025, but was a short lived offering; Tesla discountined the line after only a few months.

Since then, the company has launched a cheaper version of the Cybertruck with dual motors and all-wheel drive which costs $60,000. That model is not impacted by the latest recall.

“On affected vehicles, higher severity road perturbations and cornering may strain the stud hole in the wheel rotor, causing cracks to form,” Tesla said in a statement. “If cracking propagates with continued use and strain, the wheel stud could eventually separate from the wheel hub.”

Tesla said it will completely replace the wheel hubs and rotors on affected vehicles at no cost to owners, as is mandated by law.

The manufacturer’s recall number is SB-26-33-003. Owners can contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752.
