During its first-quarter 2026 earnings conference, Tesla's leadership announced plans to commence manufacturing of the Optimus humanoid robot at its Fremont facility in late July or August, marking a significant milestone for the company's robotics initiative.

The production timeline follows the conclusion of Model S and Model X manufacturing, scheduled for early May. However, company leadership cautioned that the initial phase will see notably restricted output levels.

Production Challenges and Technical Complexity

Tesla's chief executive acknowledged the inherent unpredictability surrounding production volumes this year, citing the substantial engineering complexity involved. The Optimus platform incorporates approximately 10,000 distinct components, all integrated within a purpose-built manufacturing infrastructure—a factor that renders accurate forecasting unfeasible at this stage.

Accelerated Line Conversion Strategy

The transition timeline represents an exceptionally compressed schedule. The Model S production run, spanning 14 years, and the Model X line, operational for 11 years, will conclude in May after manufacturing more than 610,000 combined units. Despite historical capacity of 100,000 units annually, recent sales figures have contracted to approximately 30,000 units per year.

Following the final vehicle assembly, Tesla intends to completely disassemble and reconfigure the production infrastructure. This process will commence with smaller component manufacturing systems and progress toward the final assembly stations, with complete dismantling anticipated for the coming weeks.
