Russia’s Sverdlovsk and Chelyabinsk regions came under attack from Ukrainian drones on Saturday morning, according to the Defense Ministry.

This marks the first time the regions, which are over 1,700 kilometers from Ukrainian-controlled territory, have been attacked.

Footage on social media showed smoke rising from a high-rise residential building in Yekaterinburg, Russia’s fourth most populous city. The governor of Sverdlovsk region, Denis Pasler confirmed the attack and said that nobody was killed but six people were injured.

He warned residents not to post images or footage of the drones or their impact.

The governor of the Chelyabinsk region, which borders Kazakhstan, said an attack on a facility in the city had been prevented. He said there were no casualties or damage.

But local residents reported hearing explosions from the direction of the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant, which is one of the largest steelmakers in Russia.

The Defense Ministry said Russia shot down 127 drones overnight.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
