Iconic Cast Reunites at London Premiere of The Devil Wears Prada Sequel Over Two Decades Later
The original ensemble cast gathered under clear skies in London to mark the arrival of the long-awaited follow-up to the beloved 2006 fashion comedy. Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci reprised their career-defining roles alongside newcomers Simone Ashley and Kenneth Branagh at the premiere event.
More than 20 years have passed since audiences first encountered the glamorous world of high-fashion journalism in the original The Devil Wears Prada. On Wednesday evening, the film's returning stars assembled on the red carpet to celebrate the sequel's release, which maintains the franchise's signature focus on the professional and personal dynamics of its central characters navigating the transforming landscape of fashion media.
Original Cast Reflects on Return
During her appearance at the London event, Hathaway described the experience of rejoining the project as "so much fun," reflecting on the decision she made two decades earlier to accept the original role. She told the BBC that returning held particular significance given the film's enduring cultural impact.
Blunt characterised her return to the role of Emily as seamless, comparing the experience to "a comfortable pair of old slippers." The actress revealed that her children had already viewed the film and "loved" it, though she acknowledged initial uncertainty about whether the original would achieve such lasting appeal across generations.
"When thousands of people hit the streets to watch us film, I was like, 'oh wow, this is nuts'," Blunt remarked, describing the unexpected scale of public interest during production of the sequel.
New Generation Joins the Fold
Simone Ashley, known for her role in Bridgerton, called her participation "one of the highlights of my career." She praised the mentorship opportunity afforded by working alongside Streep, Hathaway, Tucci and Blunt, describing the experience as "a masterclass."
Caleb Hearon, a comedian and writer cast as one of Miranda Priestly's assistants, acknowledged his long-standing admiration for the original film whilst maintaining professional composure on set. "It was very, very exciting and humbling and honouring to be around all the incredible people," he stated.
The Film's Cultural Legacy
Content creator Amelia Dimoldenberg, who appears in a brief role in the new film, credited the original picture with fundamentally shaping her career trajectory. At age 12, she attended a cinema screening that inspired her to pursue fashion journalism studies and aspire toward magazine work.
"I don't want to just sound dramatic but I do think it changed my life," Dimoldenberg reflected on the franchise's influence. "I found it very emotional to be there on set in New York."
The Devil Wears Prada 2 arrives in UK cinemas on 1 May.
