Splitgate studio’s Titanfall spiritual successor gets Steam page before even being announced

After glamorously promising to “make shooters great again” and failing—twice—Studio 1047 Games now wants to create the spiritual successor to one of the most beloved first-person shooter franchises ever made: Titanfall.

The game, titled EMPULSE, “is an upcoming fast-paced 6v6 movement shooter,” according to its Steam page, which went live today. It has “wallrun, grapple, and Holojump” and lets you “pilot mechs and P.A.I.N.T. your way through Freehold’s vertical streets.”

From the few screengrabs on the page, we see a lot of what can be found in Titanfall proper, what with players casting hooks to get to high-up ledges and some of them using giant robots to gain the upper hand.

Keep in mind that this game hasn’t yet received a proper announcement and that its development was leaked by Insider Gaming a few days ago.

Furthermore, EMPULSE promises a strong emphasis on movement, as well as the game’s strong vertical aspect means that moving around effectively is going to make or break every fight.

Where it differs from Titanfall is that, apparently, EMPULSE‘s mechs spawn in on the maps rather than being a unique reward for your operator, like in EA’s franchise. That means movement is even more important, as it’s seemingly going to determine who gets their hands on a mech first.

You can sign up for early access on its official webpage.

The studio, 1047 Games, previously released Splitgate 2, also a fast-paced first-person shooter, which it promised would revolutionize and save the genre from entropy. Of course, those promises went nowhere, and the game failed at the same thing twice since it was re-released five months after its initial launch.

On the other hand, Titanfall remains one of the most beloved first-person shooters of all time. Both of the games were relatively successful, and the second one became a true cult classic. It was made by the same folks who brought us other iconic shooters like Call of Duty 4 and the original Modern Warfare 2, as well as the still-popular Apex Legends.

Unfortunately, the second Titanfall launched at the worst possible moment and had to compete with EA’s own Battlefield 1, Activision’s CoD: Infinite Warfare, Killing Floor 2, and Shadow Warrior 2, though other genres were there to offset sales with the likes of Dishonored 2, Mafia 3, Watch Dogs 2, and Civilization 6.

All of these games were released within a month and a half of each other, and that basically sealed the fate of what is potentially one of the best shooters ever made.

That led EA to scrap talks of a third Titanfall, leading the devs to retinker it into what became Apex Legends. For nearly a decade now, fans have been asking for a proper sequel or successor and, unfortunately, got Highguard from the same people who made it instead.

Now, we have a studio with a not-so-great track record trying its luck, but if it fails, I think it’s only going to tarnish hopes of a new Titanfall even further.
