Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update took on the Trump administration putting the president’s face inside passports, as well as King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s state visit—both of which were meant to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
The State Department announced this week that a limited number of passports will be made with Trump’s portrait on the inside cover as another supposed indicator of the semiquincentennial. The move is one of several instances of Trump working to have his name or image put on buildings, documents, coins, and other tributes.
Co-anchor Colin Jost joked that the president’s likeness on the travel document could be useful to some: “You’ll always carry a reminder of why you fled the country.”
Jost also noted the symbolism of how Trump’s image was shown: “I love that the picture of Trump is also burning a hole in the Declaration of Independence.”
Also in the segment, Jost addressed the British royals’ four-day state visit.
Among Charles’ goals for the visit was to “seek the release of a British hostage being held by an American terrorist,” Jost joked, alongside a photo of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Michael Che then commented on how Charles met New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
“I’m surprised he didn’t take Mamdani back to England with him, because he is an Indian treasure,” he joked.
