Simons Ruled Out for Season and World Cup After Knee Injury Blow
Tottenham's Dutch midfielder Xavi Simons will miss the remainder of the season and the upcoming World Cup after sustaining a serious knee injury during Saturday's match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The 23-year-old was stretchered off in the second half of Spurs' 1-0 victory at Wolves, with medical assessments suggesting an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Simons collided with Wolves defender Hugo Bueno and, after briefly attempting to continue, collapsed to the pitch once more.
Player's Emotional Statement
Through a social media post, Simons expressed his devastation at the setback. "They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way," he wrote. "My season has come to an abrupt end and I'm just trying to process it. Honestly, I'm heartbroken. None of it makes sense."
The attacking midfielder, who joined Tottenham from RB Leipzig for £52 million in August 2025, continued: "All I've wanted to do is fight for my team and now the ability to do that has been snatched away from me … along with the World Cup. Representing my country this summer … just gone."
Critical Timing for Tottenham
Simons' injury arrives during a precarious period for the north London club. Tottenham currently occupies 18th position in the Premier League relegation zone, sitting two points below the safety line with only four matches remaining in the campaign.
World Cup Implications
The loss of Simons also affects the Netherlands' preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament begins on 11 June, with the Dutch nation commencing their Group F campaign against Japan on 14 June.
Despite his disappointment, Simons pledged continued support for his teammates. "I'll continue to be the best team-mate I can be. I have no doubt that together we'll win this fight," he concluded. "I'll walk this path now, guided by faith, with strength, with resilience, with belief, as I count down the days to getting back out there."
