Washington, DC — On Friday, Toyota Motor reported its earnings for the fiscal year ending in March 2026. Toyota sold approximately 9.6 million units globally and touted that over 5 million units were “electrified vehicles.”
While the full-year earnings from Tokyo claim “record” sales, Sierra Club isn’t buying their spin. Toyota reported a year-over-year decline in fourth-quarter operating profits, prompting the company to lower its operating income forecast by 20 percent for 2027. Toyota cited obvious ongoing challenges like U.S. tariffs, the Middle East conflict, and intensifying competition from Chinese automakers for the shortfall, but failed to mention the company’s continued failure to meet the moment and provide American customers with more fully-electrified models.
Toyota spent years lobbying against clean car standards that would have given Toyota a competitive edge in today’s auto market. The outgoing CEO, Koji Sato, acknowledged that things need to change or the automaker “might not survive.”
A global coalition of NGOs, including the Sierra Club, recently sent a letter to the incoming CEO Kenta Kon urging immediate action to address the company’s lagging electric vehicle strategy and harmful lobbying efforts against climate policies.
In response to Toyota’s financial report, Sierra Club Clean Transportation for All Director Katherine García issued the following statement:
“The auto industry is struggling and in crisis. Gas prices have surged around the world and drivers are demanding affordable electric vehicles. Globally, we are seeing a massive shift toward electric vehicle adoption, but the U.S. is lagging behind. Toyota continues to bank on the ‘electrified’ label in their marketing, of which the majority are hybrid, combustion-powered vehicles that run solely on fossil fuels. By lumping together conventional hybrid, plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles, Toyota is misleading consumers and shareholders.
“Toyota must seize this opportunity and urgently respond to the affordability crisis. As gas prices continue to rise across the country, Toyota must deliver affordable electric vehicles.”
