Russian attack leaves seven cultural institutions in Kyiv damaged – Ministry of Culture
Seven leading cultural institutions in Kyiv were damaged as a result of Russia’s massive overnight attack on May 24.

According to Ukrinform, the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine reported this on Facebook.

The list currently includes:

  • National Art Museum of Ukraine
  • National Philharmonic of Ukraine
  • National Music Academy of Ukraine
  • Ukrainian House National Center
  • Yaroslav Mudryi National Library of Ukraine
  • Kyiv Opera

The National Museum Chornobyl also sustained significant damage.

In addition, architectural landmarks, including the Contract House and the Postal Station, were damaged.

"It was a very difficult night for Ukraine. Numerous Russian missiles and Shahed drones targeted civilians. This is the largest series of damages to Kyiv’s cultural institutions since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. While Russians were receiving awards at the Cannes Film Festival, their brothers and sisters were shelling Ukrainian children. The award given to Russian artists and their attempt to whitewash themselves by shifting all blame solely onto the Russian dictator-president looked especially cynical," stated Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy and Minister of Culture Tetiana Berezhna.

The Ministry of Culture noted that it continues to collect information about the consequences of the Russian attack and coordinate assistance with the affected cultural institutions.

The National Philharmonic of Ukraine reported that despite the damage caused by the Russian attack, all concerts scheduled for today will proceed as planned. The blast wave damaged the philharmonic building, shattering windows and damaging doors.

The Yaroslav Mudryi National Library of Ukraine reported on Facebook that the historic building on Hrushevskoho Street was damaged: the blast wave destroyed windows and damaged the ceiling and facade.

The library premises at Naberezhno-Khreshchatytska Street, 1, were also damaged.

The institution announced that the library at 1 Hrushevskoho Street is temporarily suspending reader services in its reading halls.

Additional information about reopening and further changes will be announced later.

As Ukrinform previously reported, the building of the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was also damaged during the attack.
