Billionaire Philanthropist's Former Secretary Faces Dozens of Fraud Charges Over $1m in Unauthorized Luxury Purchases

The former private secretary to billionaire philanthropist Judith Neilson has been arrested and charged with 68 counts of fraud following an investigation into more than $1 million in unauthorized purchases made using a business credit card. Annalouise Spence, 50, allegedly used her employer's account to acquire luxury goods including designer clothing, fine art, and jewellery between March 2023 and September 2025.

Details of the Investigation and Arrest

Spence was taken into custody on Wednesday morning in Erskineville, located in Sydney's inner west, when New South Wales police executed search warrants at her residence and a storage facility in Campbelltown. During the operation, officers seized numerous items including luxury handbags, jewellery, clothing, documents and other personal belongings.

The investigation commenced in November of the previous year after authorities received reports concerning "alleged fraudulent expense claims made by an employee of a Chippendale business." According to police, Spence made "unauthorised purchases of luxury and personal items, including clothing, artwork and jewellery" using the business credit account without authorization.

Scale of the Alleged Fraud

Law enforcement officials stated that the total value of unauthorized transactions exceeded $1 million. According to reporting by the Sydney Morning Herald, the alleged scheme came to light following an office restructuring that led to Spence's departure in September of the previous year.

During a review of accounts, Neilson's new executive assistant identified several suspicious transactions, including:

  • A $58,600 charge from July for a rare pink-gold Rolex wristwatch purchased from a London retailer
  • A $21,000 bill from luxury department store Harrods
  • Approximately $400,000 in travel expenses
  • Roughly $335,000 spent on fashion items
  • Around $184,000 allocated to jewellery purchases
  • The unauthorized transfer of nearly one million Qantas frequent flyer points

Notably, Neilson was not present in the United Kingdom at the time of the Rolex and Harrods purchases, and she does not typically wear expensive jewellery.

About the Victim

Neilson established the Judith Neilson Institute in 2018 with a $100 million commitment. The organization is dedicated to "championing quality journalism and storytelling in Australia." She also operates the White Rabbit art gallery in Chippendale. According to the Australian Financial Review's 2025 wealth ranking, Neilson's net worth is approximately $1.2 billion.

Employment History and Next Steps

Spence had served as Neilson's private secretary since March 2017, according to her professional profile. Following her arrest, she was scheduled to appear before a virtual bail court on Thursday. However, bail was refused.

Neilson's team engaged a risk and crisis manager in November and has been collaborating with NSW police throughout the investigation. Authorities have indicated that inquiries into the matter are still ongoing.
