Cause of Death Released for Teen Found in D4vd's Vehicle; Singer Faces Murder Charges

Authorities have determined that a 14-year-old girl discovered in TikTok star D4vd's car died from multiple penetrating injuries, marking a significant development in the high-profile case that has gripped Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office announced Wednesday that Celeste Rivas Hernandez's death has been classified as a homicide. According to investigators, the teenager sustained injuries inflicted by an unspecified object or objects.

Key Facts of the Case

The victim was found deceased in the front trunk of a Tesla belonging to 21-year-old D4vd (real name David Anthony Burke) in September. The musician has been charged with murder in connection with the death and currently remains in custody without bail. He has entered a not guilty plea to all charges.

Burke's legal team, represented by attorneys Blair Berk, Marilyn Bednarski, and Regina Peter, has maintained his innocence. In a statement to the BBC, his defence counsel asserted that "actual evidence will show that David did not kill Celeste" and pledged to "vigorously defend his innocence."

Timeline of Events

Rivas Hernandez visited Burke's residence in the Hollywood Hills on April 23, 2025, and subsequently disappeared. Her parents reported her missing that same month, but her body remained undiscovered for over seven months. Police arrested Burke following his court appearance on April 20, 2026.

Medical examiners completed their determination of cause and manner of death on December 9, but authorities withheld public release of their findings pending ongoing police investigation. Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Odey Ukpo expressed relief at finally disclosing the information, stating: "After several months, I am grateful this information can now be released, not only to the public, but also to the grieving family enduring loss."

Family's Response

In their first public statement this week, Celeste's parents, Jesus Rivas and Mercedes Martinez, described their daughter as "a beautiful, strong girl who loved to sing and dance." They expressed their gratitude to law enforcement and community members for their support, stating: "We miss her deeply. All we want is Justice for Celeste."

Family attorney Patrick Steinfeld told the BBC that the family was "devastated after hearing the gruesome details that came out in David Burke's arraignment."

Authorities Address Investigation Delays

Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman emphasized the gravity of the investigation, describing the situation as "a parent's nightmare." He cited multiple challenges that prolonged the investigation, including difficulties in interviewing witnesses—some cooperative and others uncooperative—and the need to thoroughly examine all available evidence.

Police Chief Jim McDonnell defended his department's handling of the case, emphasizing that their investigation was driven by the singular purpose of securing justice. He noted that the extended time between the victim's death and discovery of her body substantially degraded physical evidence, complicating the determination of cause of death.

Career Impact

Since the discovery of Rivas Hernandez's body, Burke's professional career has effectively halted. His world tour was cancelled, and multiple brand partnerships were reportedly terminated. The artist, known for the tracks "Romantic Homicide" and "Here With Me," has largely withdrawn from public life.
