Kim Jong-un Pledges Unwavering Support for Russia Amid Growing Military Cooperation
North Korean Leader Reaffirms Commitment at War Memorial Ceremony
North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un has declared his nation's steadfast backing for Russia's foreign policy agenda, following talks with Moscow's defence minister at a solemn ceremony honouring fallen North Korean troops, according to state news agency KCNA on Monday.
The declaration came during the inauguration of a memorial complex dedicated to North Korean soldiers who perished in combat operations within Russia's Kursk region, where Ukraine mounted a cross-border offensive in 2024.
Rising Military Casualties and Deepening Alliance
According to KCNA, a Russian delegation headed by Defence Minister Andrei Belousov attended the completion ceremony for the memorial site. During the event, Kim reaffirmed North Korea's commitment to Russia's strategic objectives.
"The North Korean government would continue to fully support Russia's policies of defending its sovereignty, territorial integrity and security interests," Kim stated, the state news agency reported.
The ceremony underscores the deepening military partnership between Pyongyang and Moscow. North Korea has deployed approximately 14,000 troops to fight alongside Russian forces in the Kursk region following a bilateral mutual defence agreement signed by the two nations.
According to assessments by South Korean, Ukrainian and Western officials, the human toll of this deployment has been substantial, with more than 6,000 North Korean soldiers reportedly killed during their involvement in the conflict.
Ongoing Ukraine Conflict
Russia initiated its full-scale military invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Despite more than four years of continuous warfare, Russian forces remain engaged in active combat operations across Ukrainian territory, having seized control of approximately one-fifth of the country.
