Former Israeli prime ministers Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid announce party merger as they prepare challenge to incumbent's government ahead of scheduled 2026 vote
Two prominent political adversaries of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Sunday their intention to combine their respective parties in an effort to dismantle his governing coalition during elections anticipated later in 2026.
The former prime ministers—right-leaning Naftali Bennett and moderate-positioned Yair Lapid—jointly unveiled the consolidation of their political movements, Bennett 2026 and There is a Future, at a coordinated media briefing.
"We stand united here for the future of our children. Israel requires a fundamental shift in direction," Lapid stated while standing beside Bennett during the announcement.
Bennett announced the merged entity would operate under the name Together, with himself assuming the leadership position. "After three decades, the time has arrived to conclude our relationship with Netanyahu and establish a fresh beginning for our nation," he remarked.
Netanyahu, who has served as prime minister since the 1990s, has evolved into a contentious political personality both domestically and on the international stage.
Bennett and Lapid have previously coordinated their political efforts. Their collaboration successfully terminated Netanyahu's consecutive 12-year period in office following the 2021 electoral contest. However, the subsequent coalition administration they constructed operated with minimal parliamentary support and experienced profound disagreements regarding critical matters including the Israeli-Palestinian situation, ultimately collapsing after merely 18 months in power.
