Musk Commits to Hardware Upgrades for Millions of Tesla Vehicles Unable to Achieve Full Self-Driving

Elon Musk has acknowledged that Tesla lacks a definitive strategy to enable Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities on vehicles equipped with Hardware 3, the company's computing system used in cars manufactured between 2019 and early 2023. During the automaker's recent earnings presentation, Musk revealed that the older hardware simply cannot support unsupervised autonomous driving, despite Tesla initially designing the system with that intention.

The disclosure comes several months after Musk indicated in January 2025 that Hardware 3 owners who purchased FSD would require computer upgrades. The core technical limitation stems from Hardware 3 possessing only one-eighth of the memory bandwidth available in Hardware 4, which Musk identified as a critical component for unsupervised FSD functionality.

Upgrade Plan Takes Shape, But Details Remain Vague

Tesla intends to offer owners hardware and camera replacements, though the company has not yet finalized an implementation roadmap. "I do think over time it's going to make sense for us to convert all Hardware 3 cars to Hardware 4," Musk stated during the earnings call. However, he acknowledged that performing these conversions at existing service centers would prove prohibitively slow.

Approximately 4 million vehicles currently operate on Hardware 3 technology, though not all owners have purchased FSD packages. To facilitate efficient hardware replacement operations, Musk indicated that Tesla would need to establish "microfactories or small factories in major metropolitan areas." The CEO provided no confirmation that construction of these facilities has commenced or received scheduling approval.

In the interim, Tesla plans to release FSD version 14 for Hardware 3 vehicles by the end of June, offering some software improvements while the company works on the broader hardware solution.

Fremont Facility Pivot to Optimus Production

During the same earnings call, Musk announced that Tesla's Fremont factory will transition to manufacturing the company's humanoid Optimus robots beginning in late July or August. The facility will conclude production of Model S and Model X vehicles in May, providing Tesla with only a few months to reconfigure manufacturing equipment for robot assembly.

Tesla made the strategic decision earlier this year to discontinue Model S and X production lines to accommodate the Optimus manufacturing pivot. Musk's track record of announcing aggressive and optimistic timelines has fueled industry skepticism regarding the feasibility of completing such a substantial facility transformation within the proposed timeframe.
