MTR Corp Opens State-of-the-Art HK$300 Million Wheelset Centre, Slashing Maintenance Time by 80%
Hong Kong's leading rail operator inaugurates automated facility designed to significantly enhance operational efficiency and service reliability across key metro lines.
MTR Corporation has officially launched its inaugural wheelset maintenance facility, which is scheduled to commence operations within the coming months. The groundbreaking centre will dramatically reduce maintenance duration for this labour-intensive process, compressing what previously required over three days into a mere 10-hour turnaround.
The HK$300 million (US$38.3 million) Integrated Wheelset Maintenance Centre, situated at the Ho Man Tin siding, represents a significant technological advancement in Hong Kong's rail infrastructure. The facility harnesses automation technology to manage approximately 1,500 wheelsets annually, addressing escalating service requirements on the Tuen Ma and East Rail lines.
Advanced Technology Transforms Traditional Maintenance
According to Lee Kim-hung, deputy director of operations engineering maintenance at MTR Corp, the centre embodies a fundamental transformation of conventional maintenance practices by integrating advanced technology while prioritizing worker safety and operational standards.
"Even marginal wheel deterioration measuring just a few millimetres triggers our precision grinding process to restore optimal circular geometry. Depending on each wheelset's condition and operational longevity, we implement complete replacements at regular intervals spanning several years," Lee explained.
Addressing Railway Maintenance Complexity
Wheelset servicing and renewal constitutes among the most repetitive and resource-demanding operations within railway maintenance operations. Each train carriage incorporates four wheelsets, with each unit weighing 1.5 tonnes and consisting of two wheels paired with a single axle, underscoring the scale and complexity of this maintenance requirement.
