Five-Year-Old Girl Missing from Alice Springs Camp; Police Suspect Abduction and Search for Released Prisoner

Australian authorities are treating the disappearance of a five-year-old girl from an Aboriginal town camp in Alice Springs as a likely abduction, with police actively searching for a 47-year-old man who vanished around the same time the child went missing.

The girl, identified as Sharon, was last seen on Saturday night when her family put her to bed at their residence in the camp shortly before midnight. By Monday, investigators had escalated their response, with Acting Commander Mark Grieve of the Northern Territory Police confirming they are seeking to locate Jefferson Lewis, a 47-year-old man who was staying at the camp and disappeared coinciding with the child's vanishing.

Search Efforts Intensify

Search and rescue operations have mobilized significant resources across the remote area. Officers and volunteers are systematically searching the surrounding bush and desert regions, supported by specialized units including dog handlers, drone operators, and a helicopter. Grieve underscored the urgency of the situation during a media briefing.

"Obviously it's a terrible situation to have such a young child go missing. We're over 24 hours now so it'd certainly be my worst nightmare as a parent," Grieve stated.

Identifying Information and Criminal History

Police have released details about Sharon's appearance at the time of her disappearance. The child was wearing a dark blue T-shirt with a white ring around the neck and sleeves, paired with black boxer-style underwear.

Regarding the suspect, Grieve noted that Lewis has a history of offences related to domestic and family violence. The commander emphasized that Lewis remains one of the few individuals who were present at the Old Timers camp at the time of Sharon's disappearance and has not come forward to speak with authorities, nor have police been able to locate him.

"We want to find Sharon healthy and we want to get her back to her family," Grieve said, appealing to the public for assistance.

Police are urging anyone with information regarding Sharon's whereabouts or Lewis's location to contact authorities immediately.
