Pakistan army chief held talks with Iran's foreign minister in Tehran, state media says

Pakistan army ​chief, Asim Munir, ​held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister ​Abbas ‌Araqchi ⁠in Tehran on Friday ‌as Islamabad steps up ⁠diplomatic efforts to help mediate between ​Iran and ‌the United States, Iran's state media reported ‌on Saturday.


Both sides ​exchanged views on the latest diplomatic initiatives aimed ​at preventing ​further escalation ​and ending the Iran ​war in talks that lasted late into the night, ⁠the report said.

Iran weighs peace proposal, accuses US of 'excessive demands'

Tehran accused the United States of "excessive demands", Iranian media said on Saturday, as US media reports raised the prospect that Washington was mulling new strikes and leaders of the Islamic republic considered the latest peace proposal.


Pakistan's powerful army chief arrived in Tehran on Friday to bolster mediation and US President Donald Trump abruptly changed his plans to skip his son's wedding to stay in Washington due to "circumstances pertaining to government", fuelling speculation that the situation had entered a sensitive stage.


Yesterday's key developments:

  • European Union nations moved Friday towards imposing sanctions on Iranian officials and others responsible for blocking the Strait of Hormuz, the EU said.
  • The US did not request help from NATO on the Strait ⁠of Hormuz, said US Secretary ​of ​State Marco ​Rubio.

  • Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed 10 people, including paramedics and a child.
