Michael Jackson Biopic Cast Explains Why Abuse Allegations Are Omitted From Film
As audiences continue to fill theaters for director Antoine Fuqua's biographical film about the legendary pop icon, viewers and critics alike are raising questions regarding the movie's decision to exclude serious allegations of child sexual abuse that have shadowed Jackson's legacy.
The film, which features Colman Domingo and Nia Long portraying Jackson's parents Joe and Katherine respectively, has prompted the cast members to address the conspicuous absence of accusations that first emerged in 1993.
Timeline Focus Explains Absence of Allegations
During an appearance on the Today show, Domingo clarified the production's creative decision regarding the film's temporal scope. "The film takes place from the '60s to 1988, so it does not go into the first allegations," he stated, emphasizing that this timeline naturally precedes the emergence of the controversial claims.
The actor further elaborated on the filmmakers' approach to their subject matter: "We centered it on the makings of Michael. It's an intimate portrait of who Michael is through his eyes. That's what this film is."
Potential for Future Projects
The framing of the project suggests the possibility that additional films may explore other periods of Jackson's life, though neither the cast nor filmmakers have made definitive statements regarding sequels at this time.
