Melania Trump opens Mother’s Day military tribute with reminder of deaths from husband’s Iran war

First Lady Melania Trump appeared to leave her husband a bit uncomfortable when she reminded a group of military mothers at the White House of the 13 U.S. service members who’ve died in the war he started with Iran more than two months ago.

Speaking in the East Room Tuesday at an event billed as a Military Mother's Day Event, Melania Trump recalled how she’d been overwhelmed with feelings when she joined her husband at a dignified transfer ceremony marking the return of the dead service members to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware in March.

As her husband, President Donald Trump, stood next to her and watched, she told the military mothers and other attendees that she “often” finds herself thinking “about the brave people who make the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.”

“When I went to honor the fallen, fallen service members from the 103rd Sustainment Command at Dover Air Force Base last March, I realized that words cannot comfort the all consuming grief that family members — and mothers in particular — experience,” she said.

“The loss is overwhelming. Although I understand the deep pride these families feel in their loved ones’ service to our great Republic, I cannot fathom the depth of their sorrow.”

The first lady added that in this “time of military conflict,” it is “military mothers who find themselves alone, awake [with] their entire thoughts in the darkest hours of the night.”

Continuing, Melania Trump drew laughs from the crowd when she suggested that her husband’s “empathy transcends” his role as president and called him a “caring leader who constantly remembers each and every American soldier is someone's child.”

At that point, the president took to the lectern to say there was “nothing more important” than military mothers and appeared to credit them with voting for him in the 2024 election.

“Without you, I don't think I would be in this house,” he said.

He then launched into a defense of the Iran war, downplaying it as a “skirmish” in which the U.S. is “doing unbelievably well” and comparing it to the operation by which U.S. forces captured the ex-Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro in January.

“We're doing pretty much equally as well, I would say, larger, but we're doing very well in Iran. It's going very smoothly, and we'll see what happens,” he said.

“They want to make a deal, they want to negotiate. And I think that military mothers would want to hear that.”

After segueing into a series of shout-outs to cabinet members, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and CIA Director John Ratcliffe, he appeared to imply that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth may have acquired some extra bravery from drink during the assassination attempt against him at last month’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Addressing Hegseth’s third wife, Jennifer Hegseth, he said the Pentagon boss had been “standing on the top of a table” at the dinner when “everybody else was under the damn table.”

“Anyway, he's doing a fantastic job,” he said.

President Trump also thanked the first lady for the “amazing job you’ve done” and boasted about her Amazon-funded documentary, Melania.

“She did a little movie. It became the number one movie. Now, you know, and I can't do it, because if I did, they would be all over. It wasn't number one, it was number two. It was number five. So I can't — I have to be very, very careful with it,” he said.

He added that his wife is “more importantly ... an incredible mom” to their son, Barron Trump, describing the nearly 7-foot-tall 20-year-old as “a little buy who’s quite tall.”

“And he’s great, Barron, and she takes great care of him,” he said.
